This metallic glass print frames a perched Silvereye in mid-forage, beak lifted toward a tufted Bottlebrush bloom as ribbons of green leaves arc across a clear blue sky. The glass brings a crisp, luminous clarity to every feather, while the metallic layer adds a subtle sheen that makes the yellow plumage glow and the pink filaments of the Bottlebrush sparkle.
The Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) is a tiny Australian songbird best known for the neat white ring around its eye and its quick, whisper-soft movements through flowering trees. They’re nimble nectar sippers and insect gleaners, often visiting Bottlebrush and other native shrubs where pollen dusts their faces as they feed. Photographing birds is my favourite subject and moments like this often come down to luck, being in the right place at the right time. It’s pure fun to glimpse their world up close and appreciate how beautiful these small birds really are.
What I love most about this metallic glass print is the full close-up view of the Silvereye, where you can read the fine feather detail and even see light reflecting in the eye. I love the way the bird is lit, not all in shadow and not all in sunlight, a balanced mix that reveals depth. I also love the colour harmony: yellow from the Silvereye, red from the Bottlebrush, green from the leaves, and blue from the sky. There’s so much to explore in such beautiful detail.
