Scarlet Greenroom metallic glass print hanging on wall above console table

This metallic glass print captures a tender moment with a female Scarlet Honeyeater paused on a bottlebrush branch, the light slipping through leaves to paint soft greens across the scene. Her fine plumage is rendered in exquisite detail, from the silky grey breast to the warm brown mantle, and that delicate blush of orange on cheek and chin. Bottlebrush nuts stud the branch like tiny beads, offering a sense of scale that makes her smallness feel even more endearing.

Photographed near Broken River in Eungella National Park in September, this is the season when nectar flows and the honeyeaters follow the blossoms. Scarlet Honeyeaters are pocket sized, often only ten to twelve centimetres long, and they sip with a brush tipped tongue made for bottlebrush and grevillea flowers. The females wear muted tones while the males flash bright red, yet both move with quick, darting grace and a high chiming call that gives them away long before you see them.

What I love most about this metallic glass print is the intimacy of the viewpoint. The lens peers through the foliage so you feel hidden with her, the “blushing” face adds a gentle personality, and the crisp feather detail invites slow looking. The contrast between her tiny frame and the surprisingly large looking seed capsules turns a quiet portrait into a story of delicacy and wonder.
