This metallic glass print frames a honeybee resting on a cluster of powder-blue blooms. The wings are crisp, the petals soft and airy, and the background falls away into gentle blur so the bee sits clearly in the centre of a blue sea. Tones run from luminous near-white petals to deep, inky shadows, giving the scene a clean, modern contrast.
The beautiful plant, a Plumbago (Plumbago Auriculata) has deep-blue clusters on airy sprays that bees can’t resist. This particular plant found at Broken River in Queensland, burst into a huge, clouded bloom, humming with hundreds of bees. The long flower tubes make natural landing strips, and the pale blue petals cast a cool, luminous colour in soft light. The display is brief; a week later most flowers had faded and the moment had passed.
What I love most about this metallic glass print is the precise central focus on the bee, anchored amid that sea of glowing colour. The bright, almost white highlights on some petals play against the near-black pockets of shadow, so the stripes, wings, and flower petals stand out with satisfying clarity.
