Fairywren Wire - Metallic Glass Print

Metallic glass print hanging on the wall, showing a Red-backed Fairywren perched on a fine wire in soft green grass

This metallic glass print pauses with a male Red-backed Fairywren perched on a fine wire, tail flicked high against a soft field of green. His velvet black body is slashed with vivid scarlet across the mantle and rump, and the close view reveals delicate feathering and tiny claws while the grasses melt to colour. The scene feels bright and lively, a tiny ember in a sea of green.

Photographed in a grassy paddock near Broken River, this species is one of Australia’s smallest songbirds. In breeding season males wear brilliant red and black, then moult to brown outside it. Red-backed Fairywrens live in cooperative family groups, foraging low for insects, cocking their tails as they hop, and weaving domed nests tucked close to the ground.

What I love most about this metallic glass print is how a bird no bigger than a matchbox car can fill the frame with character. The creamy green blur keeps the composition simple, so the wren’s crimson mantle and jet tail pop as he balances on the wire. It is crisp, minimal, and captivating, a joyful spark of colour and life.
